Bounce address protection for email

چکیده

One of the more vexing problems with the lack of security in Internet email is ‘‘collateral spam’’: the backscatter of bounces from forged email that is sent to the forged address. The effect of this is for users to ignore bounces as just another kind of spam, and even for some email system administrators to disable bounces altogether. So as well as being a nuisance, it is making email less reliable. This paper will describe a technique for determining whether a bounce is in response to a legitimate message or if it is collateral spam. I’ll describe the difficulties which make the technique more complicated to implement and deploy, and my approach to a solution for Cambridge University. I’ll also describe how the technique can be extended to detecting the original forgeries as well as the backscatter.

Vacuum Tunneling by Cosmic Strings

We consider vacuum tunneling of a new kind where the false vacua are not translationally invariant, but have topological defects that break some of their translational symmetries. In the particular case where the topological defects are cosmic strings, we show the existence of an O(2)×O(2) symmetric bounce configuration that allows a semi-classical estimate of the rate of cosmic string induced ...

Estimating Vacuum Tunneling Rates

We show that in Euclidean field theories that have bounce solutions, the bounce with the least action is the global minimum of the action in an open space of field configurations. A rigorous upper bound on the minimal bounce action can therefore be obtained by finite numerical methods. This sets a lower bound on the tunneling rate which, fortunately, is often the more interesting and useful bou...

STAMP: Toward Reclaiming Email Address Privacy

Email has grown into one of the dominant forms of communication in the 21st century. However, email systems were designed without security in mind, thus allowing attackers to abuse the system and send unsolicited email (or spam). The problem of spam has become so severe that recent studies [1], [2] report that over 90% of the emails sent in 2007 were spam, resulting in productivity losses amoun...

The impact that placing email addresses on the Internet has on the receipt of spam: An empirical analysis

Email communication is encumbered with a mass of email messages which their recipients have neither requested nor require. Even worse, the impacts of these messages are far from being simply an annoyance, as they also involve economic damage. This manuscript examines the resource " email addresses " , which is vital for any potential bulk mailer and spammer. Both a methodology and a honeypot co...
